6th Grade Fears

Day 8 is someone who made my life hell. Being brought up by my mom I see it as more of, someone I let make my life hell. She would always say if you don't bring your money you can't "buy" whatever the other guy is shelling out. I give this honor to the 6th grade mean girl at Basehor Elementary School. I was teased by several kids but there was one who outshone all the rest, Jamie Turner. She was wicked and devious to the very core. She saw an easy target, fat, self conscious, no self esteem, bad hair, worse clothes, big glasses and took advantage of the situation. There weren't any anti-bullying laws back then or "Be Kind" assemblies. There were teachers who would say not to interact with her, she didn't really mean that, and to just ignore it. I finally snapped at the end of the year under all the pressure and went begging and crying to my teacher to make her stop, so she called in Jamie and her sidekick Noel and told them in front of me to stop and that was enough. I honestly think she did it more for herself so she wouldn't have to hear me complain any longer. It was a pathetic slap on the wrist. On the way out of the classroom I turned to Jamie and asked "What I ever did to you?" she gave me this look I will never forget, tossed her hair and said "Nothing" turned and left the room. I stood there dazed and watched her walk away. She was true to her word and never gave me a hard time again. I just couldn't imagine being so mean to someone who never did anything to you.

This is one of the reasons I'm very worried about Fred and middle school. She isn't fat, she has pretty good self esteem, she has cute hair, clothes and glasses. She is already better off than I was. She and all the other kids in the district have had numerous anti-bullying assemblies, they participate in the "Be Kind" program and the teachers are more aware that there is a problem. I know that kids are still kids and she might get picked on but I can at least hope she'll have a better way to resolve her problem.

Girls are mean to each other no matter what. Hopefully Fred will have enough of a base to sail through it without too many scars. (And I remember one girl looking me up and down and tossing her hair away from me after I've done nothing to her specifically. ;) )

So was she just being a base whore? Sorry the name of your elementary is hysterical! Plus it will probably make you feel better to think of her that way.

I have faith in Fred and even more faith in You and ElCid as involved, no nonsense parents, something I wish you had... two confident, no nonsense parents! I can not see ElCid being taken in by Zishka!!!

@ Kathy - it wasn't just the name of the school. That is the name of the town we lived in, or outside of would probably be more accurate..

I remember 6th grade. Tall, gangly, just moved from Utah to Los Angeles. Didn't dress right etc. Anyway there was this girl there that always teased me (daily) about my big ears. One day (after months of this) I said well at least I can cover my ears, what are you going to do about your honking nose (Or something like that) She covered her nose and was mortified. Never said another word. Such a hard time.
