My Little Girls

I don't think my girls are really very old. They are 9.5, 8 & 5. They play house, babies, Barbies, Bratz, dress up and still like watching PBS Kids. The love to cut, color, glue, staple, paint, and cut anything that holds still long enough and won't get them hurt by me.

They are allowed to watch most G rated movies, quite a few PG, and very few PG -13 (George still loves the first Transformers, she still has it fast forwarded through that one scene). I do screen what they watch quite closely and cringe when they are watching some reality TV show with any kind of bad language.

Today I discovered I must be in the minority as a parent, at least at the girl's school. I was helping in Jr's classroom this morning, making Gingerbread men, and one set of four kids that I was helping started talking about TV and what they like to watch. They were horrified that all 4 of the TV's in our house only go to channel 16. One boy recommended we get a flat screen that goes all the way to 900 like he has at his house. Then the topic turned to movies. Then they all started discussing New Moon. I was floored. All 4 of them had seen the movie and were talking about it. I started contributing to the conversation and then I totally spoiled the suspense for the next 2 (3?) movies by telling them what happens. They were all SO excited that I knew what happens next and kept asking questions. "Will Victoria die?" "Does Bella really become a vampire?" "Does she stick with Edward or does she choose Jacob in the end?" "Do Bella and Edward really get married??" I answered all their questions and laughed to myself as I did it.

My girls have only seen a small part of the first movie. I have no plans on renting it for them. I have no plans to purchase it. The same goes for New Moon and Eclipse and Breaking Dawn.

I never realized how strict I was with what they watch and read. I sometimes felt that they were watching way too old stuff, Survivor, ANTM, Amazing Race, Biggest Loser, Nightly News. (sometimes the war and H1N1 news worries them) Now I feel like I'm doing pretty good in that area!

Dude you know other people let their kids watch things you would prefer your real kids not watch and I am sure there are people who think you are terrible cuz your girls watch ANTM and have probably seen parts of DH or other more adult shows. It's all about what people think is ok. Maybe they think since there isn't any sex in the vampire movies and vampires are fake it is ok

Uhm NO. My children do NOT watch DH. Probably pieces of CSI though.

My children watch the same movies over and over and over. We don't have any channels! I am amazed by what people let their kids watch and read.

I said they have probably seen parts of it not that they watch it. I've seen your children hiding around the corner peering at the tv when they was supposed to be in bed....

You are strict. Maybe even more strict than your parents but I am not sure on that one...

I wasn't allowed to watch PG-13 movies until I was 13 and R rated movies until I was 16. My Dad took me to see Total Recal after my 16th birthday.

I think I turned out OK, and I am really glad I got to be a kid for a long long time. Being a grownup is hard sometimes. :)
