Can I make this for $40?

Jr. has liked this costume for several years, it's her favorite kind of candy and this is the year she has decided to go for it.The question is do I buy it or make it. The cost for just the dress (either way I'm buying the wings and hair boppers) is $40. I could totally make it, I'm sure Heddy's would have just about all those fabrics but I'm pretty sure the cost would probably come close to the purchase price. I'll already be paying shipping for the other peices so should I just buy the dress too? I feel kind of like I'm cheating if I just buy it ... am I really?

No! Just buy it. One less costume you have to make. If the cost is the same, then why make it? It will save you at least a couple of hours you could be doing something else. :)

If you add in your time, I think that you are probably better-off buying it.

That would be 100% NOT cheating. If the materials will cost about the same, then the only thing to ask is if you would enjoy making it more than buying it. But if you buy it, then you definitely have that many more hours to do something else you would enjoy.

I agree with ElCid - you have to factor in the time it will take. The "homemade" part of the costume could be what she does with her hair or something to make it her "own look." Usually, making it is a good idea because you often don't find exactly what you want at a reasonable price - but sometimes there are exceptions!
