October 5th 2000, honestly, I'm not sure how I spent my birthday that year. My beautiful, brilliant, baby was nearly 6 months old, which means the crying had subsided and the crawling hadn't quite started. That day however, a new show came out. A show I would fall in love with. A show I would watch repeatedly for years. Decades even. A show that would eventually give my 4th daughter her name. Gilmore Girls.
I had a baby, Tom Brokaw, and Thursday nights (it moved to Tuesday later), Gilmore girls to keep me company on the lonely days. I knew very few people in Las Vegas. I had zero friends.
This fun new show was peppy and fast paced. There was a cool mom with a teenage daughter. They had each other, they were lonely sometimes but they always had each other. Maybe someday my crying baby would grow up and we could hang out and be friends. Spoiler Alert - That did not happen. She is 16 now and prefers her peer's company to mine.
My third baby was born 7 weeks early, 18 days before my birthday. She had to learn to breathe, swallow, and eat all at the same time. It was a tough process. All I wanted that year was to sit, and hold my baby, on my own couch, and watch Gilmore Girls. Miraculously it happened! October 5th, 2004 I was home, holding my baby, and watching my show.
Years went by, the show went through some ups and downs, and I still watched. It finally went off the air, I cried, and watched the re-runs. I bought all the seasons on DVD, and watched those, repeatedly.
In 2012 I had another beautiful baby. ElCid and I were at odds on what to name her. We settled on Lorelai and we call her Rory. Yep, we are those parents. The ones with the pop culture reference as their child's name. We get mixed reactions to it. Some people are totally confused, they don't know why Rory is a short version of Lorelai. Other people TOTALLY realize what we did and get a *should I ask or is this offensive* look on their faces and cautiously ask "Like Gilmore Girls?" When I happily say yes, their reactions range from happy fan girls to smirky you-named-your-kid-what.
Gilmore Girls is a happy place. It is inside jokes only the cool kids get. It is aggravating. It is tiny details that loop around and don't always add up ;) It is debating. It is love. And caring. And happiness.
I am so excited to be just over an hour away from the REAL conclusion that the series should have had. Bring out the tissues, get a pillow ready for screaming, and binge watch all 6 hours.
Where are all the new pictures??
